Al-Anon Family Groups

Are you troubled by someone else’s drinking?

Are you troubled by someone else’s drinking? You are not alone. Millions of people have been affected by the drinking of a loved one, and Al-Anon Family Groups offer support, understanding, and hope. Whether you are a spouse, child, sibling, parent, or friend of someone struggling with alcoholism, Al-Anon provides a safe and welcoming space where you can find encouragement and guidance.

What is Al-Anon?

Al-Anon is a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who come together to share their experiences, strength, and hope. The goal is to help each other cope with the challenges of living with alcoholism in a family or friendship setting. Al-Anon members believe that alcoholism is a family disease, meaning it impacts not only the drinker but also those close to them. By changing our attitudes and focusing on our own well-being, we can aid in our own recovery, regardless of whether the alcoholic seeks help.

How Al-Anon Can Help?

Al-Anon provides a safe and confidential space to learn how to detach with love, set healthy boundaries, and find peace even in difficult circumstances. The program follows the Twelve Steps, which offer a spiritual (but non-religious) path to healing. Members support one another by sharing their personal journeys, challenges, and triumphs in dealing with the effects of another person’s drinking.

What Al-Anon Is Not

  • Al-Anon is not a religious group, though spirituality is an important aspect of recovery.
  • It does not give advice or tell members what to do.
  • It is not a counseling or therapy service.
  • Al-Anon does not intervene in anyone’s drinking or try to get them to stop.

Alateen: Support for Young People

For younger members affected by someone else’s drinking, Al-Anon offers Alateen. This group provides teens with a place to share experiences and receive support from others who understand their struggles. Alateen follows the same principles as Al-Anon and helps young people develop healthy coping mechanisms.

Getting Involved

Al-Anon is available worldwide, with in-person and online meetings. There are no membership dues—Al-Anon is self-supporting through voluntary contributions. If you think Al-Anon could help you, we encourage you to attend a meeting and see for yourself.
